Stainless steel rivnuts (rivet-nuts) are a way to provide a permanently fixed nut, and are especially useful where you do not have access to the back side of a tube or bulkhead – the rivnut can be fitted entirely from the outside, using a special rivet setting tool. We have two styles of stainless steel rivnuts, these ones have a countersunk head, the other ones that we have are made with a flanged head.
Our rivnuts have a standard metric thread (a range of rivnut sizes are available), and they are made from solid 316-grade stainless steel so suitable for marine and salt-water exposure. Rivnuts are installed using a rivnut application tool, there are manual versions of the rivnut setting tool available which are not too costly, there are also adaptors for electric drill/drivers for installing rivnuts.
Each rivnut, depending on its size, has a recommended installation hole size, and grip range (the thickness of material that it is best suited to). If you want to install a rivnut into a thickness of material which is greater than the recommended grip range, you might want to locally thin (by counter-sinking or similar) to achieve the recommended grip thickness.
